Tire Recycling Fee in Alberta Explained (2026 Update)
Why is there a $5 line item on every new tire in Alberta? Here's what the Tire Recycling Fee actually funds, the exact 2026 rates, and why the province's program is one of the best in North America.

Every receipt you get at Shah Tire — or any tire shop in Alberta — has a "Tire Recycling Fee" line. Customers ask about it every week. Here's exactly what it is and where the money goes.
What Is the TRF?
It's a provincially mandated environmental fee collected by Alberta Recycling Management Authority (ARMA) on every new tire sold in Alberta. The money funds the collection, processing, and recycling of used tires across the province — keeping them out of landfills and waterways.
2026 TRF Rates
- Passenger / light-truck tire: $5.00
- Medium truck / bus tire: $9.00
- Agricultural / large off-road: $40.00 – $100.00 depending on size
Where the Money Actually Goes
- Free drop-off of used tires at certified collection sites across Alberta
- Shredding and crumb-rubber processing facilities
- Recycled rubber products: playground surfacing, highway sound-walls, sports turf, mats
- Anti-dumping enforcement and education
The Program Works
Alberta recycles over 95% of all tires sold in the province every year. The industry has diverted over 100 million tires from landfill since the program started in 1992. It's one of the most successful EPR (extended producer responsibility) programs in North America.
So the next time you see that $5 on your Shah Tire invoice — it's doing real work. Thank you for participating.
